The escape storyline

Congratulations! Your application to join Lizzy on her pioneering regenerative farming programme with affordable co-housing and self-contained cottages has made it through the first stage. The farming project is mixing traditional practices with modern knowledge to support a productive but varied and flourishing ecosystem. We aren’t just farming the usual plants & animals, but also gathering sloes; blackberries; wild spring greens, and utilising traditional ‘pest’ species too, such as pigeon and rabbit. The housing is a mix of student style flats with communal spaces for eating and socialising made out of the old farm house, cottages and opportunities for tiny homes & self builds too.

Interest in the project has been huge and Lizzy has had over 100 applicants for each of the housing options. She developed this escape room to test you and your team’s communication, teamwork, observation, critical thinking and problem solving skills. All key requirements for living and or working in a pioneering new approch like this one. If you are successful, you will be invited to the next round of interviews.

Are you ready to prove your mettle and get the chance to live in a wondrous space with wildlife galore on your doorstep?

“Really excellent, thanks so much. Hope to do another event with you at some point 🙂”

Outline of the escape

You will be met at Farthing Downs, a traditionally managed chalk grassland, just bursting with biodiversity. From the top of the Downs, you can often see the free roaming Red Sussex cows grazing against the skyline of Central London on the horizon. You’ll be guided on a half mile walk along paths through woodlands carefully managed for their rare and endangered dormouse population. Before reaching our private woodland site.  This is where the puzzles begin. We will be based at our main camp, underneath a ex-military parachute, that keeps the majority of the weather out. We can light a fire in the centre of this and suspend a kettle over it as well if requested.

After your escape, we will walk you back to the meeting point, unless you choose to explore the open access land around our private woodland further.

Make a day of it

Farthing Downs, your meeting point, has an abundance of wildlife in its traditionally managed chalk grasslands, it also has a history of habitation dating back to the Bronze Age, as well as panoramic views of London’s skyline.

Happy Valley adjoins Farthing Downs and combined their chalk grassland boasts the most extensive population of greater yellow-rattle in London. These emerge out of the grasses and can be seen alongside brightly coloured orchids, bedstraws and scabious in spring and summer.

There are numerous paths and signposted walks across these two incredible areas of open access land, tucked within Greater London and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just a hop, skip and a jump away is Chaldon Church, an 11th Century church with a one of a kind 12th Century doom painting on its back wall. This painting depicts souls being judged and often found wanting with and the fates that await them. The church serves tea and cakes in Sundays through the summer 3.00 – 4.30pm, so why not enjoy a cuppa and some history at the same time? If you are looking for something a little stronger to celebrate your success or commiserate your loss, the other side of the valley has The Fox, our local, traditional, countryside pub. It has outdoor seating or a roaring fire, depending on the weather, and serves a wide range of food and drinks throughout the day.
