Outline of the escape

You will be met at Farthing Downs, a traditionally managed chalk grassland, just bursting with biodiversity. From the top of the Downs, you can often see the free roaming Red Sussex cows grazing against the skyline of Central London on the horizon. You’ll be guided on a half mile walk along paths through woodlands carefully managed for their rare and endangered dormouse population. Upon reaching our private woodland site, we will be based underneath a ex military parachute, that keeps the majority of the weather out. We will light a fire in the centre of this and suspend a kettle over it. You’ll be guided through a knife safety demonstration, and then the puzzles begin.

If you successfully succeed at part one of the escape you move onto part two. This is a walk, over species rich chalk grasslands, following navigational steps you’ll have uncovered. You’ll arrive at a traditional country pub, which serves a wide range of food, be sure to use your drinks tokens before the time runs out. The cost of a taxi (at a time of your choosing) for your group to return to the start or the nearest zone 6 train station is included in your escape if you make it in time.

Make a day of it

Farthing Downs, your meeting point, is a treasure trove of wildlife abounding on traditionally managed chalk grasslands. Its history stretches back to the Bronze Age, and it offers panoramic views of London’s skyline.

Adjacent to Farthing Downs lies Happy Valley, creating an extensive area of chalk grassland that supports the largest population of greater yellow-rattle in London. In spring and summer, the grasslands come alive with vibrant orchids, bedstraws and scabious, painting the landscape with a riot of colour.

Explore a network of paths and signposted walks that weave through these remarkable open-access areas, located within Greater London and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For a taste of history, take a short detour to Chaldon Church, an 11th-century gem featuring a rare 12th-century doom painting. This striking artwork illustrates the judgment of souls and the consequences that await them. The church also serves tea and cakes on Sundays from 3.00 pm to 4:30 pm during the summer months—a perfect opportunity to enjoy a refreshing break steeped in history.

Upgrade your free celebratory drink with a hearty meal at The Fox. This traditional countryside pub offers a warm atmosphere with outdoor seating in the sunshine or a cozy fire indoors on cooler days. The menu includes a wide range of food and drinks, making it an ideal spot to toast your success or soothe the sting of a challenge unmet.

Come and experience the natural beauty, historical intrigue, and local hospitality of Farthing Downs and Happy Valley — an outdoor adventure right on London’s doorstep.
